SmallShorts 2025: HSE Art and Design School Welcomes Applications for International Student Festival of Screen Arts

SmallShorts 2025: HSE Art and Design School Welcomes Applications for International Student Festival of Screen Arts

HSE Art and Design School

The SmallShorts Festival will be held via the HSE Art and Design School competitive platform as part of the ninth season of the HSE CREATIVE OPEN International Student Award until March 17, 2025. The competition is divided into three categories.

SmallShorts is an international student festival of screen arts, which has been screening short films by young creators from all over the world since 2019. In 2025, participants are challenged not only to make experimental films and animations, but also to master the conventions of feature and documentary films.

For the seventh time, the festival will serve as a platform for bold ideas, valuable networking, and flashy debuts. Potential friends and colleagues will gather to share their experience, skills, and creative energy.

Categories

This category is for works in which you master the conventions of feature and documentary filmmaking, create audience stories, and learn how to shoot with a team.

Daring, tricks, and mysterious outlooks: send us your clever movie discoveries, mystery films, and exercises in formalism.

It has been said that ‘cinema is an exceptional case of animation.’ To agree or disagree, show your frame-by-frame created worlds using any techniques and materials.

Project Requirements

  • The maximum duration is 20 minutes.
  • The creator of the project must be a university or college student.
  • The work must feature embedded English subtitles, a link to a video hosting site, and a link to download the project.

Event Dates

Applications are accepted until March 17, 2025. The final screening and award ceremony will take place in June 2025. The screenings will take place at the Zotov Centre in Moscow and at the Levashovskiy Khlebozavod in St Petersburg. The exact dates of the screenings and the additional cultural programme will be announced later.
